Progressing in my sculpting studies, this time with an oil based clay called NSP by Chavant. The workflow is rather different to water based clay, theres much more prep work involved and less fluidity in the sculpting progress, due to the fact it is a lot harder to adjust and shape forms with your fingers once the clay begins to harden. But the ability to carve and sculpt forms and details is unmatched to water based clay.

Here are 2 wip shots, primary and secondary forms and details are all done, just need to touch up with fine tertiary details and smooth things out a bit.

First attempt of a complete portrait sculpt,I almost have my oil based clay kit ready, cant wait to get stuck in with Chavant NSP. It was hard trying to get the little details using water based clay.

Medium: Water based air drying clay
Time: 1 day
Size: 22cm Tall.

Practising with water based clay. 2nd attempt. Aim was to get some forms going, wasn’t really focused on the design and proportions at this stage, still trying to understand how clay works.

Spartan Helmet Layout

Here is the final beauty layout & sculpt of the Halo Spartan Helmet, I wanted the still shot to represent a somewhat advertisement look and feel, possible used as a game promotion piece.

Still very much in the beginning stages of Zbrush competence, but this will have to do for my first piece. Cheers

Update – Polishing up the jaw and ear guards with more detail and new subtool. could not have done this in mudbox, would have had to go back into maya as easily.

concept breakdown into subtools

My first ever Zbrush Sculpt! This is the result of around 9 hours of fumbling around in Zbrush, the interface definitely takes getting used to – so many buttons, sliders and knobs :) Useds mostly the planar. clipping, trimming and standard brushes.
First impressions of Zbrush is the mesh can hold detail better then Mudbox and the beauty of subtools to combine / slice / import meshes is a great work flow.
